Hat Trick History

Hat Trick formed in September of 1997 in Columbus, Ohio with Clark Buelow, Lisa Huelskamp, and Jeff Tayama.

Lisa was connected to Jeff at Ludlow's through their mutual OSU friend Eileen. Jeff and Lisa clicked and had one night of practice before heading to an open mic slot at BW-3’s on North High Street and Lane Avenue (when it used to be on the east side of High Street) hosted by Gary Hall. Clark, walking down High Street to be that night's feature, heard them playing Janice Joplin. Then, when Lisa heard Clark singing Bread, she asked Jeff to introduce them; Lisa joined Clark by adding harmony to Jet Plane and Indigo Girls. The three of us hit it off and plans were made to give it a go as a trio.

Soon we had our first performance at the that same BW-3's Open Mic night as the feature, then Dave A.'s Halloween Party, and we began to pick up more gigs. Regular appearances followed at Oldfield’s on Fourth in Columbus, The Tin Goose Saloon at Port Clinton, Ohio on Lake Erie, and Tommy Keegan's and Barrister Hall in the Brewery District, Columbus.

The harmonies were strong, the repertoire grew, and the Columbus venues have welcomed the group ever since. On friendly notes, Jeff went on to pursue other interests in June of 1999 sharing his talents on original pieces. By September of 1999, Tim Berridge became the third member of Hat Trick adding new dynamics. We enjoyed venues like Digger and Finch (where Dublin Bridge Park is now), The Patio & The Barn (love you always Jane!), LaScala, and The Grandview Cafe and how kind Dicky D. and the staff was to us! Oh, the memories! Today, you can check the wall of photos under the GC stairs. You just may see yourself in the pictures!

From September 23, 2005-April 15 2006, local accomplished solo artist Dave Smith played his first Hat Trick show with Lisa and Tim at La Scala in Dublin. Dave performed with us for 6 1/2 months until Clark moved back from Atlanta and then later to the Dayton area. When Lisa's November 12, 2014 ladder fall took her out of the game for a while, Clark and Tim had a strong duo show.  Both the duo and the trio enjoyed playing at The Boardwalk at Put-In-Bay, the LC Pavillion, Grandview Cafe, Fado Easton, The Barn, and other amazing venues.

On January 15, 2018 Lisa, Clark, and Tim played at the Columbus Convention Center, their last show before Lisa had heart surgery and a long recovery. The guys carried on until Lisa was healthy and ready to get playing again. The trio played a party on March 14, 2020 with Pat sitting in for Tim that night. The next day, the Ohio covid shut down began. Finally, as the pandemic was subsiding, Lisa and Tim played at the Golf Club of Dublin on July 8, 2022, and it was like no time had passed...and what a great crowd!

On September 21, 2023, Tim and Lisa welcomed long-time friend and fellow guitarist/vocalist Patrick Buzzard into the fold. The three have known each other for decades, jamming on stage at each other's gigs and swapping stories.  The formal union is comfortable, and the friendship, good times, and great music keep rollin’!

The trio has opened for O.A.R., Ben Folds, Rusted Root, and Toad the Wet Sprocket and has performed at/for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Columbus Clippers, Columbus Crew, USAFL National Championships, PGA Presidents Cup and other Muirfield golf events, Red White & Boom! at the Hyatt on Capital Square, OSU Stadium, OSU Faculty Club on the Oval, Columbus Museum of Art, Honda Family Days in the Arena District, Jr. League Gala, DSW, and the Race for the Cure in downtown Columbus. Hat Trick has performed throughout Ohio from Lake Erie’s Put-In-Bay to the Ohio River as well as out-of-state and internationally. Other collaborations included the YMCA, Autism Speaks, Brain Injury Association of Ohio, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, St. Baldrick's, W.A.R.M. the Red Cross, Ohio Optimist Club, Susan G. Koman Brest Cancer, Ronald McDonald House, and more.

Hat Trick has survived relocations, injuries, and the covid years and has thrived thanks to the Hat Trickers whose support is invaluable. As always, no show is ever the same. There are still no set lists, and the people who share their time by coming to hear us are just as appreciated.

Thank you so much, and we'll see you at the show!
